For Yachay, education is a vehicle for the development of people and communities-the medium to bring together youth leadership, local needs and action to develop capacities and to change lives.
The Yachay Initiative is an international youth-run organization that is dedicated to supporting youth empowerment. Yachay works closely with local communities and community-based organizations to run projects that link education and action in a way that supports young people to realize the positive change they wish to see. For Yachay, education is the vehicle for this change as local ideas are discussed, developed, and applied, bringing together the practice of leadership, cooperation and empowerment towards the goal of inspiring action.

Meeting the Challenges to Establish Ongoing Programs in Ecuador
Posted by Taylor on 2011-12-13 18:51:14
As we approach the eve of the 1 year anniversary of Yachay’s first project in Ecuador, we continue the push to launch year-round programs in Ecuador this June. Our goal for the first 10 months is to:

- run 10 youth leadership programs,
-work with 70 families in particular economic need to build their first
family vegetable gardens
-launch a new community internship program connecting youth from the
community with work experience opportunities in the cities
-launch an international internship program to support one or two youth
to gain experience working on Yachay’s projects each year.
-Implement a school snack program together with the schools where we are
offering our leadership programs.

To achieve these goals, we must first address two challenges:

Firstly, we must fundraise the money necessary to support two international volunteers to work with two people from the communities to co-run the programs. Funding needs include financing program costs (roughly $15 000) and providing a living stipend for the volunteers ($4800 for two people for 8 months) and a salary for the community workers ($6400 for two people for 8 months). We must also raise the funds necessary to train the first group of workers and to establish the infrastructure to further develop effective programs (roughly $3500).

The second challenge is to find two international volunteers. These two, together with Cristian Miñarcaja (who has worked with us since our pilot project) and one other member of the communities, will be in charge of running Yachay’s programs for the first extended period. They will be our main presence in Ecuador and will work to ensure the successful continuation and future development of our programs.

To address the first challenge, we are launching a major fundraising campaign, aimed at raising $35 000 by May 2012. Over the coming months we will be approaching foundations, companies and our community of supporters to ask for help in making our programs a reality. To address the second challenge, we have already begun developing an application and selection process as well as a strategy for targeting potential applicants so that we may find the best volunteers possible.

If you have suggestions for how we may best meet these challenges, or if you would like to offer your own support, please send me an email at taylor.hartrick@yachayinitiative.org
